The North Is Not Happy With This Administration’ – Rufai Politics

The North Is Not Happy With This Administration’ – Rufai

Arise Television presenter Rufai Oseni claimed on Monday that voters in the North are unhappy with President Bola Tinubu’s government.   Naija News reports that Oseni warned that the 2027 general elections could surprise the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Oseni stated this on Monday while reviewing political developments ahead of the polls on Arise Television’s Morning Show. The broadcaster cautioned that the backing some politicians enjoy from people in the North should not be taken as a sign of broad support for the Federal Government. He noted that cash handouts and public displays of loyalty might not translate into votes on election day. Oseni stated, “Do not deceive yourself, you see, politicians are the most delusional and the most optimistic people on earth. “Because you are giving tonnes of people money in the north they are shouting your name, they are saying everything is well. Elections will shock you. Do not deceive yourself. “The north is not happy with this administration.” Oseni admitted his view might be criticised as a sweeping generalisation, but explained it was based on his reading of the mood of people in the region rather than any single scientific study. The journalist further stated, “I know a lot of people will come back at me and say that’s a fallacy of hasty generalisation. “But it’s an opinion gathering. It’s in feeling the pulse of the people in the north. It’s feeling the trajectory of what is happening in the north.” He, however, cited public sentiment analysis as one of the indicators that shaped his opinion. The presenter also questioned whether governors who moved to the APC after the crisis that broke up the Peoples Democratic Party would be fully loyal to the ruling party in the 2027 elections. According to him, some governors joined the APC because their former party collapsed rather than out of genuine conviction. “Will the APC be able to trust the complete commitments of the governors that came to the fold of the APC because of the disintegration of the PDP? That’s another factor. “You see, it’s a strange marriage arrangement. They just had to come to the APC, not because if they had a choice, if their own party was not disintegrated, or had not gone through the metamorphosis, do you think they’re going to come? “So, are they going to be able to give their full commitment and just sweep everything off like that? It’s going to be interesting,” Oseni added.

2027: ‘Anyone Who Does Not Want Tinubu’s Re-election May Not Have Second Term In Life’ – Umahi Politics

2027: ‘Anyone Who Does Not Want Tinubu’s Re-election May Not Have Second Term In Life’ – Umahi

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has said those working against President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid may not secure a second term in their lives.   NovaNews NG reports that Umahi made the remarks on Sunday, October 18, at an event in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State. Umahi expressed confidence that Tinubu and Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru would secure 95 percent of the state’s votes in the upcoming general elections. He said, “President Bola Tinubu is going to win a second term. Governor Francis Nwifuru is going to win a second term. Anyone who does not want Tinubu and Nwifuru to get their second terms, may he not have a second term in his life.” The Minister also urged political stakeholders in the state to remain aligned with the administration’s direction, adding that party leaders will stand firmly behind President Tinubu, Governor Nwifuru, and his own leadership in the region. In other news, Umahi has dismissed reports of a strained relationship with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing the former Rivers State governor as a progressive politician and a member of the same political family. Umahi spoke at a press conference in Abuja, responding to reports of divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and speculation over his relationship with Wike. “We need Wike as Wike needs us. So, it’s one family,” the minister said.

Semenyo Faces Eight Weeks Out As Haaland Nears Man City Return

Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo could be sidelined for up to eight weeks with a knee injury, while striker Erling Haaland is hopeful of returning against AEK Athens in the Champions League on Tuesday.   City manager Enzo Maresca confirmed Semenyo’s expected absence after the Ghana international sustained the injury during their 3-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town at the weekend. Semenyo came on as a substitute in the 76th minute but suffered the setback shortly afterwards. A subsequent scan, however, revealed that the injury was less serious than initially feared. “After the scan we feel much better because it’s not as bad as we expected,” Maresca said. “It could be eight weeks, so now the most important thing is for him to recover.” he winger’s absence is a setback for City as they prepare for their European campaign, with the club facing a prolonged period without the Ghanaian international. Meanwhile, Haaland could return to the squad for Tuesday’s clash after picking up a knock against Ipswich Town. The Norwegian striker was seen limping after the match, raising concerns about his availability for the Champions League fixture. However, Maresca expressed optimism about Haaland’s chances of featuring, with the forward set to undergo a fitness assessment during training. “He can be available,” the manager said. “We have a session now, and we’ll see.”

‘If Buhari As A Retired General Couldn’t End Nigeria’s Insecurity, What Do You Expect Of Tinubu?’ – Yari Politics

‘If Buhari As A Retired General Couldn’t End Nigeria’s Insecurity, What Do You Expect Of Tinubu?’ – Yari

The Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Senator Abdulaziz Yari, has defended the performance of President Bola Tinubu in the area of security.   Yari submitted that President Tinubu has tried his best and should not be blamed for his inability to fully wipe out insecurity in the country. Novanews reports that the former Governor of Zamfara State made the submisison on Monday, during a visit to Kebbi State, where he met with Governor Nasir Idris, traditional rulers and other party leaders in Birnin Kebbi. Yari said if ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired General, did his best but could not fully tackle insecurity, then there is no room to blame President Tinubu for the country’s insecurity challenges. He maintained that President Tinubu is not folding his hands but is doing his best to fight insecurity and other challenges facing the country. “If a retired general did his best but could not completely tackle insecurity, what do you expect of President Tinubu, who is not a general? Nevertheless, the President has done his utmost best to address the security challenges confronting the country,” he said. The APC campaign DG commended the Kebbi State Governor and other APC leaders for their efforts in mobilising support for the party, expressing confidence that their efforts will culminate in victory for Tinubu and the party in the 2027 elections. We are leading the campaign for the President’s re-election and other candidates of our party. We appreciate you for bringing the emirs together under one umbrella at the Emir of Gwandu’s palace. “We recognise what you are doing as governors and your contributions towards ensuring victory for our party in 2027,” he said. Yari also urged Nigerians to reflect on their relationship with God, noting that addressing insecurity required collective responsibility alongside government efforts. He pleaded with Nigerians to support the current administration, insisting that the economic hardship citizens face is not unique to the country. Yari, however, added that the government is working on measures to cushion the hardship and make life easier for Nigerians. In his response, Governor Idris described the visit by the PCC delegation as a welcome development. He affirmed that the people of Kebbi would vote for the APC and President Tinubu in 2027. “We have no reason not to support the President. We have prominent leaders such as Sen. Atiku Bagudu, Sen. Adamu Aliero and Amb. Saidu Dakingari. “You have seen the people of Kebbi and their overwhelming support. We are for the APC and we are for President Tinubu,” Idris said.

Saudi Arabia executes 2 Bangladeshis over 'indecent acts,' and other Mideast news Worldwide news

Saudi Arabia executes 2 Bangladeshis over 'indecent acts,' and other Mideast news

Saudi Arabia says it has executed a man and a woman from Bangladesh over “indecent acts” inside a mosque in Mecca. Bangladesh said that it hadn't been informed of the executions beforehand. Meanwhile, Israeli police have arrested 10 suspects in a wave of settler violence that targeted a U.S. journalist and European diplomats in the occupied West Bank, and Iran-backed Houthi rebels announced attacks in Yemen and across Saudi Arabia. Here's the latest news from the Middle East on Monday. Read our full coverage here. Saudi Arabia executes 2 Bangladeshis over ‘indecent acts’ Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals, a man and a woman, after they were convicted of committing “indecent acts” in a mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca. Bangladesh said that it wasn't informed before the sentences were carried out and has sought information from Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Interior Ministry said the Bangladeshis were executed because of “the gravity and seriousness of their actions in violating the sanctity of both time and place.” It did not elaborate. Israel arrests 10 suspects following settler violence Police said 10 suspects were arrested on Monday following violent attacks by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank that prompted heavy criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Israeli police didn't identify who attacked the people who had come to support Palestinians during their annual olive harvest. Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine was beaten Friday by a crowd of young male settlers while documenting the scene, leaving her with several broken ribs and vertebrae. Masked settlers also attacked a group of European diplomats on Saturday. Palestinians have been subject to surging attacks, rarely leading to arrests or punishment, rights groups say. Netanyahu’s main rival in the Oct. 27 elections, Gadi Eisenkot, said “a handful of criminals is burning up the last shreds of legitimacy left to the state of Israel.” UN food agency cutting food aid to Palestinians for lack of funding The money shortage has forced the World Food Program to deny food and cash assistance to 500,000 people in Gaza and 200,000 people in the West Bank, according to its acting director Carl Skau, who urged international donors to provide $450 million to fund hot meals and food parcels for the next six months. Skau said Monday in a video briefing that “life in Gaza remains absolutely brutal” and incredibly dangerous, with U.N. teams recording about 50 attacks per day in the past week, while in the West Bank, he saw burned olive fields, camps and villages. There have been more settler attacks over these first two weeks of the olive harvest than during all of last year, he said. Commercial deliveries to Gaza to resume, Israel says     Israel's military said Monday that it would resume coordinating the entry of commercial trucks into Gaza, but warned that future reports of merchants paying taxes to Hamas would lead to their licenses being revoked. The suspension since Wednesday cut off the flow of needed food and goods. COGAT, the Israeli military body that oversees humanitarian affairs in Gaza, cited disagreements between Hamas and the merchants over taxes, and claimed to be communicating a decision made by the merchants. Truckers in Gaza said Israel was using the disagreement as a pretext to fight Hamas’ taxation efforts. They said officials in Gaza called the money a “donation” to pay civil servants rather than a tax. COGAT said Monday that Hamas had withdrawn its demands. Houthis claim attacks across Saudi Arabia, strike Yemeni military camp killing 53 Iran-backed Houthi rebels killed at least 53 soldiers in ballistic missile strikes on a Yemeni military camp on Monday, making it one of the deadliest attacks on the Saudi-backed government’s forces since rebels shattered a 2022 ceasefire in Yemen’s civil war. The strikes on the al-Alam military camp also wounded 200 recruits, the Shabwa provincial government said. The Houthi rebels also claimed Monday to have carried out six military operations targeting oil infrastructure, airports and military sites across Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities say recent Houthi missile and drone attacks have killed 19 people and injured more than 350 others. The Saudi Civil Defense issued more danger alerts across parts of the kingdom Monday.     Israeli strikes on Gaza kill 4, including teens Three separate Israeli strikes hit Gaza City, killing at least two people, according to Shifa Hospital, and two 17-year-olds were killed in another strike on Khan Younis in southern Gaza, according to Nasser Hospital. The Israeli military said it struck Hamas militants in each of the attacks on Gaza City. It did not comment on the other attack. Israel continues to launch deadly attacks on the enclave more than a year after Israel and Hamas struck a ceasefire deal. UK warns companies against helping to build Israeli settlements The United Kingdom’s top diplomat warned companies against violating international law by helping to build Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Their construction has surged under Netanyahu's government, which views the West Bank as the Jewish homeland and opposes a Palestinian state. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the E1 settlement project approved by Israel, which would cut the West Bank in two, “is a direct threat to the prospect of a two-state solution.” Israel’s top diplomat responded by saying his country wouldn’t be “intimidated by threats.” Iran embraces Russia, rejects German accusation of attack on Jewish leader Iran’s top security official called for stronger cooperation after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Tehran on Monday, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said. Gen. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said that cooperation could include joint economic projects, such as the completion of transportation corridors. Lavrov, meanwhile, condemned the U.S.-Israeli military attacks on Iran as illegal. Also in Tehran on Monday, Iran summoned Germany’s ambassador over what the Iranian Foreign Ministry called baseless accusations. Germany had summoned Iran’s ambassador in Berlin after a court sentenced two men with ties to Iran’s intelligence service for plotting to kill the leader of a Jewish organization in Germany. Iran president says country has no ‘fundamental disagreements’ with neighbors President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran is willing to resolve tensions through dialogue, blaming U.S. interference for divisions in the region, state-run IRNA reported.     Pezeshkian said during Monday's meeting with Lavrov that U.S. military bases in neighboring countries increased tensions, instability and insecurity. ___ This report will be updated throughout the day as new developments emerge.

Bangladesh says it was not informed of its citizens' execution by Saudi Arabia Worldwide news

Bangladesh says it was not informed of its citizens' execution by Saudi Arabia

Bangladeshi authorities say they were not informed of the recent execution of two Bangladeshi nationals in the holy city of Mecca until after it had taken place, local media reports. A Bangladeshi man and woman were executed last Wednesday after being convicted of committing an "indecent act" inside a mosque, according to the Saudi interior ministry. The ministry did not specify the nature of the offending act. Bangladesh says it has reached out to the Saudi Arabian government to ask for more details about the case. The two Muslim countries share a close relationship due to their religious affinity and strong economic ties. More than three million Bangladeshis work and live in Saudi Arabia, mostly in low-paying jobs, and news of the double execution has raised public concern in Bangladesh. According to the Saudi interior ministry, the two Bangladeshi nationals were convicted and sentenced to death under "tazir", which in Islamic law refers to punishments left to the discretion of the judge. The ministry statement said they were handed the sentences because of the severity of the offence, and the fact that they violated the "sanctity" of the mosque. Bangladesh has reached out to the Saudi government about the offences involved and legal proceedings in the case, said state minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam. The government would consider next steps, such as the repatriation of the bodies, after getting information from Saudi authorities, Islam said. She added that the government was committed to safeguarding the welfare and interests of Bangladeshis abroad. The two executed Bangladeshis were included in a list of prisoners that Saudi Arabia had shared with Bangladesh, upon a request from the Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah - but that list did not indicate that the pair had been sentenced to death, the Daily Star reported. This is not the first time that foreign nationals have been executed by Saudi authorities. According to Amnesty International, the country has executed around 100 people this year, many of whom are foreigners convicted of drug offences. In 2011, eight Bangladeshi men were publicly executed in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh after they were found guilty of killing an Egyptian. Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia overturned a death sentence handed to a Sri Lankan man over a comment he had made on Facebook, which had led to him being convicted of blasphemy. That decision came after the casesparked public outcry in Sri Lanka and spurred diplomatic efforts to seek clemency for the man.

Who Are the Top Nigerian Players in Europe? Best Super Eagles Stars in 2026 Sports

Who Are the Top Nigerian Players in Europe? Best Super Eagles Stars in 2026

Nigeria has a rich football history and continues to produce talented players who compete in some of Europe's biggest leagues. From powerful strikers and creative wingers to hardworking midfielders and dependable defenders, Nigerian footballers are making their mark across the continent. In 2026, names such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Raphael Onyedika stand out among Nigerian players attracting attention in European football. Their performances are important not only for their clubs but also for the future of the Super Eagles. European football offers players opportunities to compete against some of the world's strongest teams, participate in prestigious competitions, and develop their technical and tactical abilities. However, identifying the top Nigerian players requires looking beyond popularity. Goals, assists, defensive performances, consistency, trophies, and influence on a team's playing style all matter. This article explores some of the leading Nigerian footballers in Europe, their strengths, their contributions, and why football fans should follow their careers. 1. Victor Osimhen – One of Nigeria's Leading Strikers Victor Osimhen is one of the most prominent Nigerian footballers competing in Europe. The striker plays for Galatasaray in Türkiye and has established himself as a dangerous forward through his finishing, movement, and physical strength. Osimhen rose to international prominence after scoring ten goals at the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, helping Nigeria win the tournament. He subsequently developed his career in European football, representing clubs including Lille and Napoli before moving to Galatasaray. His most memorable club achievement came with Napoli, where he played a major role in the club's 2022–23 Serie A title-winning campaign. He also won the 2023 African Player of the Year award. Osimhen's strengths include his ability to attack crosses, run behind defenders, win aerial duels, and finish chances under pressure. He can also press opposing defenders and create problems through his movement. UEFA reported in April 2026 that Osimhen had become Nigeria's leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League, highlighting his impact in European competition. <Cite refs={["turn154253search0"]}/> 2. Ademola Lookman – A Creative and Dangerous Forward Ademola Lookman is another major Nigerian name in European football. The forward joined Atlético Madrid in Spain in February 2026 after an impressive spell with Atalanta in Italy. <Cite refs={["turn154253news13","turn154253search2"]}/> Lookman became especially famous for his performance in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, when he scored a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen to help Atalanta win the trophy. His playing style combines acceleration, close control, intelligent movement, and the ability to create scoring opportunities. He can play as a winger or a forward, making him useful in different attacking systems. Lookman's success also earned him the 2024 African Player of the Year award. His performances have demonstrated how Nigerian players can become decisive figures in major European competitions. At Atlético Madrid, he has the opportunity to continue developing under a demanding tactical system and compete against some of Europe's strongest clubs. 3. Wilfred Ndidi – A Midfield Player Known for Winning the Ball Wilfred Ndidi is known for his defensive work in midfield. He has played in English football and is now with BeÅŸiktaÅŸ in Türkiye, according to recent Nigerian football reporting. <Cite refs={["turn154253search8","turn154253search9"]}/> Ndidi's main strength is his ability to disrupt opposing attacks. He reads passing lanes, makes tackles, wins possession, and helps protect the defence. A defensive midfielder often does important work that does not appear in goal statistics. By recovering the ball and distributing it to teammates, Ndidi helps his side regain control and launch attacks. He also brings international experience to the Super Eagles and has served as Nigeria's captain. His ability to provide balance makes him one of the Nigerian players worth watching, especially in matches where midfield control is essential. 4. Alex Iwobi – A Versatile Midfielder Alex Iwobi has built an extensive career in English football. Known for his movement, passing, and versatility, he can operate in central midfield or in more advanced positions. Iwobi developed through Arsenal's academy before playing for Everton and Fulham. His experience in the Premier League has helped him understand the demands of a fast and physically challenging competition. One of Iwobi's strengths is his ability to connect different areas of the pitch. He can carry the ball forward, find teammates between defensive lines, and help his team maintain possession. He is also capable of adapting to different tactical roles, which makes him useful to coaches who need flexibility in midfield. For Nigeria, Iwobi's experience and creativity can help the Super Eagles move the ball from defence into attack. 5. Calvin Bassey – A Strong and Modern Defender Calvin Bassey is among the Nigerian defenders competing in a major European league. The centre-back has played for clubs including Rangers and Ajax and has featured for Fulham in the English Premier League. Bassey combines physical strength with recovery speed and the ability to carry the ball out of defence. These qualities are valuable in modern football, where defenders are expected to contribute to both defending and building attacks. He can challenge forwards in physical duels, cover space behind the defensive line, and help his team progress the ball into midfield. Defenders do not always receive the same attention as goalscorers, but their performances are essential to a team's success. Bassey's development is therefore important for both his club and the Super Eagles. 6. Raphael Onyedika – A Midfielder with European Experience Raphael Onyedika has attracted attention for his work in central midfield. He previously established himself at Club Brugge in Belgium and has been listed by recent Nigerian football reporting among players making moves in European football. The Nigeria Football Federation named him in its September 2026 international squad. <Cite refs={["turn154253search8","turn154253search3"]}/> Onyedika's strengths include ball recovery, positioning, and the ability to help his team maintain midfield balance. A midfielder in his role must recognise danger early, cover spaces left by attacking teammates, and make sensible decisions when under pressure. European club competitions have given Onyedika opportunities to develop his tactical understanding against different styles of opposition. His continued progress could strengthen Nigeria's midfield options. 7. Samuel Chukwueze – A Winger with Dribbling Ability Samuel Chukwueze is known for his speed, direct attacking style, and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. The winger gained recognition during his time at Villarreal in Spain before moving to AC Milan in Italy. His career has demonstrated the value of pace and creativity in wide attacking positions. Chukwueze can stretch defensive lines, cut inside to create shooting opportunities, or deliver the ball into dangerous areas. His quick changes of direction can force defenders to make difficult decisions. For a winger, consistency is important. Producing accurate final passes and making effective decisions near the penalty area can turn individual skill into a greater contribution to the team. Chukwueze remains an interesting player for fans who enjoy watching technically gifted Nigerian attackers. 8. Paul Onuachu – A Striker with Aerial Strength Paul Onuachu is a Nigerian centre-forward who has played in several European leagues and is associated with Trabzonspor in Türkiye. Standing out for his height and physical presence, Onuachu is particularly dangerous when attacking crosses and set pieces. His aerial ability can give his team another way to create scoring opportunities. However, an effective centre-forward must contribute more than winning headers. Movement, finishing, link-up play, and positioning are also important. Onuachu's style provides a different option from Osimhen. While both can lead the attack, their physical characteristics and approaches offer coaches different tactical possibilities. 9. Gift Orban – An Attacking Player to Watch Gift Orban is another Nigerian forward attracting attention in European football. Recent coverage of Nigerian players abroad has highlighted his scoring performances, and he has been associated with Amedspor in Türkiye. <Cite refs={["turn154253search1","turn154253search5"]}/> Orban is known for his attacking instincts, willingness to shoot, and ability to find opportunities around the penalty area. Young and developing forwards need regular playing time to improve their decision-making, movement, and consistency. Performing well over a full season can help establish a stronger reputation than a short run of goals alone. For Nigerian fans, Orban is one of the players worth following as he works to turn his attacking ability into sustained success. 10. Chidera Ejuke – A Skillful Winger Chidera Ejuke is an attacking player whose game is built around dribbling, acceleration, and creativity. He has experience across several European leagues and has been associated with Sevilla in Spain. <Cite refs={["turn154253search1"]}/> Ejuke's ability to take on defenders makes him useful when a team needs to break down a compact defence. Wingers who can beat their markers create space for overlapping full-backs and attacking midfielders. Like other wide attackers, he benefits from improving his final delivery and decision-making in the last third. His experience in different footballing environments has also exposed him to different tactical approaches. Why Are Nigerian Players Successful in Europe? Several factors help explain the continued presence of Nigerian footballers in European leagues. Strong physical and technical qualities Many Nigerian players combine athleticism with technical ability. Speed, strength, coordination, and ball control can help them adapt to demanding competitions. Youth academies and scouting Academies and scouting networks identify talented youngsters and connect them with professional opportunities. International youth tournaments can also introduce Nigerian players to European clubs. Experience against elite opponents Playing in European leagues exposes footballers to different tactical systems and high levels of competition. This experience can help them improve their positioning, decision-making, and overall understanding of the game. International competition Playing for the Super Eagles gives Nigerian footballers opportunities to test themselves against strong national teams. Their international experience can also strengthen their confidence at club level. Conclusion Nigeria continues to produce footballers who make an impact across Europe. Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman stand out for their attacking achievements, while Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Raphael Onyedika provide important qualities in midfield and defence. Samuel Chukwueze, Paul Onuachu, Gift Orban, and Chidera Ejuke also offer different attacking strengths and remain players for fans to follow. There is no single ranking that can definitively establish the best Nigerian player in every position. Goalscorers, midfielders, defenders, and goalkeepers contribute in different ways, and their value depends on their roles and performances. For Nigerian football, having players compete in different European leagues creates valuable experience for the national team and inspires young people who dream of becoming professional footballers. As the 2026–27 season continues, the most useful measure of these players will be their consistency, contribution to their clubs, and performances when representing Nigeria. Can Nigeria Still Qualify for the 2026 World Cup? Everything You Need to Know Sports

Can Nigeria Still Qualify for the 2026 World Cup? Everything You Need to Know

Football fans across Nigeria had high hopes of seeing the Super Eagles compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With talented players such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Calvin Bassey, many supporters believed Nigeria had the quality to return to football's biggest international tournament. Unfortunately, Nigeria's World Cup dream ended after a painful defeat to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) in the African playoff final. The Super Eagles subsequently missed out on the 2026 tournament, which featured 48 national teams across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. So, can Nigeria still qualify for the 2026 World Cup? No. The qualification process has concluded, and Nigeria is not among the 48 teams that qualified. FIFA's official list confirms that DR Congo secured Africa's place in the intercontinental playoff and ultimately qualified for the tournament. Although the result was disappointing for Nigerian football fans, understanding what happened can help explain the challenges the Super Eagles faced and what the country needs to do before the next World Cup. Why Did Nigeria Fail to Qualify for the 2026 World Cup? Nigeria failed to secure automatic qualification during the African qualifying group stage and subsequently lost the opportunity to qualify through the playoff route. The African qualifying competition offered nine direct places at the expanded 2026 World Cup. A further African team could qualify through the FIFA intercontinental playoff tournament. Nigeria finished behind South Africa in its qualifying group. This meant the Super Eagles had to pursue an alternative route rather than qualify automatically. The team earned a place in the African playoff competition by finishing among the four best runners-up. That gave Nigeria another opportunity, but it also meant the team had to win additional high-pressure matches. Nigeria defeated Gabon in the playoff semi-final after extra time, keeping its World Cup hopes alive. However, the decisive match against DR Congo proved to be the final obstacle. What Happened in the Nigeria vs DR Congo Playoff Final? The match between Nigeria and DR Congo was crucial because the winner would advance to the intercontinental playoff tournament, where the final World Cup places would be decided. The game ended 1–1 after extra time, forcing the teams to decide the contest through a penalty shootout. DR Congo won the shootout 4–3, ending Nigeria's qualification campaign. The defeat was especially painful because Nigeria had reached the final stage of the African playoff competition after working hard to recover from its group-stage difficulties. For the players, coaches, and supporters, the result represented a major disappointment. The Super Eagles had talented individuals capable of competing against strong international opponents, but they could not complete the qualification journey. DR Congo advanced to the intercontinental playoff tournament and eventually secured a place at the 2026 World Cup. Nigeria, meanwhile, was left outside the final list of qualified nations. Did Nigeria Appeal the DR Congo Result? Following the defeat, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) submitted a complaint to FIFA concerning the eligibility of certain DR Congo players. The complaint raised hopes among some Nigerian supporters that an official ruling might reopen the qualification race. However, the protest did not result in Nigeria receiving a World Cup place. Although the issue attracted considerable public discussion, a complaint or appeal does not automatically change a match result. FIFA must assess the evidence and apply its regulations before determining whether any action is justified. The final qualification outcome remained unchanged: DR Congo secured the African playoff place and qualified for the 2026 World Cup, while Nigeria did not. This episode highlights the importance of understanding the difference between an allegation, an investigation, and an official decision. Football fans should rely on confirmed announcements from FIFA and the relevant football associations when following disciplinary disputes. Which African Countries Qualified for the 2026 World Cup? Africa received ten places at the expanded 2026 tournament: nine direct qualification places and one additional place through the intercontinental playoff route. The ten African countries that qualified were: Algeria Cabo Verde DR Congo Côte d'Ivoire Egypt Ghana Morocco Senegal South Africa Tunisia Nigeria's absence from this list was a significant disappointment because the country has a long history of competing at the World Cup. The qualification of Cabo Verde was particularly notable because it marked the country's first appearance at the men's FIFA World Cup. DR Congo also returned to the tournament for the first time since its previous appearance as Zaire in 1974. These outcomes demonstrate that African qualifying has become increasingly competitive. Traditional football powers can no longer assume that their history or reputation will guarantee a place at the finals. Why Was Missing the World Cup Such a Big Disappointment for Nigeria? 1. Nigeria has a strong World Cup history Nigeria has competed at several previous men's World Cups and has developed a reputation for producing talented international players. Supporters naturally expected the Super Eagles to challenge for a place in the expanded 2026 competition. Missing the tournament meant the country could not build on that history during this edition. 2. The team has talented players Nigeria has players competing at respected clubs in Europe and elsewhere. Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and other internationals have demonstrated their abilities at club level. However, international qualification requires the entire team to perform effectively over a series of matches. Individual talent cannot guarantee success if the team struggles with consistency, tactical execution, or decisive moments. 3. The financial and commercial opportunities were lost World Cup participation can create opportunities for football associations, sponsors, broadcasters, businesses, and players. Qualification also brings international attention to a country's football programme. Missing the tournament meant Nigeria lost the opportunity to benefit directly from participating in the 2026 finals. 4. Young Nigerian fans missed an opportunity Major international tournaments can inspire children to take up football and support their national team. The Super Eagles' absence was therefore disappointing not only for existing supporters but also for young fans hoping to see Nigeria compete on the world stage. What Must Nigeria Do to Qualify for the Next World Cup? Although the 2026 qualification campaign is over, Nigeria can use the experience to prepare for future competitions. Improve consistency during qualifying matches World Cup qualification requires teams to collect points throughout the campaign. Dropping points against opponents that could have been beaten can create enormous pressure during the final rounds. Nigeria needs to approach every qualifying match with preparation, concentration, and a clear tactical plan. Build a balanced team A successful national team needs more than talented attackers. It also requires dependable defenders, effective midfielders, goalkeepers who perform under pressure, and substitutes capable of making an impact. Building a balanced squad can help the Super Eagles compete more consistently against different opponents. Develop young players Nigeria has a large pool of young footballing talent. Strong youth academies, quality coaching, competitive domestic football, and effective scouting can help develop players who are ready for senior international competition. Young players should receive opportunities based on their performances and readiness rather than their reputation alone. Strengthen football administration Clear planning, effective communication, and good organisation are essential to a successful national football programme. Football authorities must ensure that coaches and players have the preparation, support, and resources needed to compete effectively. Learn from the playoff defeat The loss to DR Congo should be examined carefully. Reviewing tactical decisions, player performance, preparation, and the team's response to pressure can help identify areas for improvement. The purpose of such a review should be to learn from the experience and build a stronger team for future qualifying campaigns. Will Nigeria Play at the Next World Cup? Nigeria's next opportunity will be the qualification campaign for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles will need to compete through the qualification process established for that tournament. The precise route, opponents, and schedule will depend on the official qualification regulations and draw for the 2030 competition. For Nigerian supporters, the focus now should be on rebuilding confidence, developing players, and improving the national team's overall performance. Missing one World Cup does not mean Nigeria cannot return to the competition in the future. The country has a substantial football following, a history of producing talented players, and the potential to compete internationally. Turning that potential into qualification will require effective planning and consistent performances. Conclusion Nigeria can no longer qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup because the qualification process has ended. The Super Eagles lost to DR Congo on penalties after a 1–1 draw in the African playoff final, and DR Congo went on to secure a place at the tournament. The result was disappointing for Nigeria, particularly given the quality of players available to the national team. Nevertheless, it also provides an opportunity to examine what went wrong and prepare more effectively for future competitions. For Nigerian football to move forward, the priorities should include consistent performances, strong coaching, youth development, effective administration, and a balanced national team. The 2026 World Cup dream is over for Nigeria, but the country's ambitions should not end there. With the right preparation and improvements, the Super Eagles can work towards returning to the world's biggest football stage in 2030. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) 1. Who Is the Most Popular Footballer in Nigeria? Meet Victor Osimhen

Football is one of the most loved sports in Nigeria. From busy streets and school playgrounds to viewing centres and football academies, millions of Nigerians follow the game with passion. Football fans support local clubs, watch European leagues, celebrate the Super Eagles, and proudly follow Nigerian players competing abroad. Among the country's many talented footballers, one name stands out in discussions about popularity: Victor Osimhen. Known for his goalscoring ability, determination, and inspiring journey from Lagos to international football, Osimhen has become one of the most recognisable active Nigerian football stars. However, Nigeria has produced many other popular players, including Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Ahmed Musa, Asisat Oshoala, and legendary former internationals such as Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu. So, who is the most popular footballer in Nigeria? This article explores Osimhen's popularity, his achievements, the other footballers Nigerians admire, and the reasons football stars attract so much attention in the country. Who Is the Most Popular Footballer in Nigeria? Victor Osimhen is a strong candidate for the title of Nigeria's most popular active male footballer. His performances for club and country, international recognition, and large social-media following have helped him become a major figure in Nigerian football. Osimhen also received significant recognition in September 2026 when he won the King of the Pitch award at the Nigeria Pitch Awards. The award recognised his contribution to Nigerian football during 2025. He also won the Rashidi Yekini Award for Best Striker of the Year. These achievements reinforce his standing among Nigeria's leading football personalities. Nevertheless, there is no single, universally accepted measurement that proves one player is the most popular with every Nigerian. Some fans may prefer Osimhen, while others admire former stars, midfielders, women's footballers, or players who represent their favourite European clubs. For that reason, Osimhen is best described as one of Nigeria's most prominent and popular active footballers rather than the undisputed favourite of every fan. Who Is Victor Osimhen? Victor James Osimhen is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a striker. He was born on 29 December 1998 in Lagos, Nigeria. Osimhen grew up in a family facing financial challenges. His journey into professional football required determination, discipline, and the willingness to take opportunities when they appeared. His international breakthrough came during the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Chile. Osimhen scored ten goals in the tournament as Nigeria won the competition. His performances attracted international attention and helped establish him as a promising young striker. He subsequently developed his career in European football, playing for clubs including VfL Wolfsburg, Charleroi, Lille, and Napoli before joining Galatasaray. His time at Napoli was especially memorable because he helped the Italian club win the Serie A title in the 2022–23 season. That championship was particularly significant because Napoli had not won the Italian league title since 1990. Osimhen's goals and attacking performances made him one of the most celebrated players in the club's modern history. Why Is Victor Osimhen So Popular in Nigeria? Several factors explain why Osimhen attracts attention from Nigerian football supporters. 1. His goalscoring ability Osimhen is known for his powerful finishing, movement inside the penalty area, and ability to challenge defenders. He can score with his head, finish from close range, and use his pace to exploit spaces behind defensive lines. These qualities make him an important attacking player for both club and country. For Nigerian fans, watching a homegrown talent succeed against some of the strongest defenders in Europe is a source of pride. 2. His success in European football Performing well in a major European league can increase a player's international visibility. Osimhen's success in Italy and Türkiye has helped him attract supporters beyond Nigeria. His contribution to Napoli's Serie A title-winning campaign was particularly important. He also won the 2023 African Player of the Year award, confirming his status among the continent's leading footballers. 3. His connection with Nigerian supporters Many fans appreciate Osimhen's journey from Lagos to the highest levels of professional football. His story illustrates how talent, opportunity, and persistence can combine to create a successful sporting career. Young Nigerians who hope to become professional footballers can see aspects of their own ambitions in his journey. 4. His performances for the Super Eagles The Nigerian national team plays an important role in bringing football fans together. Players who represent the Super Eagles in major competitions can become national sporting figures. Osimhen's goals and attacking contributions have made him an important part of conversations about Nigeria's hopes in African and international competitions. 5. His online popularity Social media allows fans to follow players outside matchdays. Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and other platforms provide access to training videos, personal updates, celebrations, and interviews. Osimhen has developed a substantial online following. A 2025 ranking published by Afrik-Foot placed him first among Nigerian footballers in its social-media-following comparison, although follower counts change over time and do not necessarily represent the preferences of every fan. Other Popular Footballers in Nigeria Although Osimhen is a leading candidate, several other footballers enjoy considerable support among Nigerians. Alex Iwobi Alex Iwobi is a Nigerian midfielder known for his technical ability, movement, and versatility. He has played in the English Premier League for clubs including Arsenal, Everton, and Fulham. Iwobi is valued for his ability to carry the ball forward, connect midfield with attack, and operate in different positions. He is also a regular subject of discussion among Super Eagles supporters. His experience in English football and international competitions has helped him maintain a strong profile among Nigerian fans. Ademola Lookman Ademola Lookman has attracted attention through his attacking performances and achievements in European football. The forward became particularly prominent after helping Atalanta win the 2024 UEFA Europa League, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen. Lookman's ability to dribble, create chances, and finish attacks has made him an important player for Nigeria. His success demonstrates that Nigerian footballers can make a major impact in European club competitions. Ahmed Musa Ahmed Musa remains one of the most recognisable names in Nigerian football. He represented the Super Eagles at major international tournaments and became famous for scoring twice against Argentina at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Musa also captained Nigeria and contributed to the country's success at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Although his career stage differs from that of younger stars, his achievements have secured him a lasting place in Nigerian football history. Asisat Oshoala Asisat Oshoala is one of Nigeria's most accomplished women's footballers. She has represented the Super Falcons at international tournaments and played for major clubs, including Barcelona's women's team. Oshoala has won multiple African Women's Player of the Year awards and has helped raise the visibility of women's football across Africa. When discussing the most popular footballers in Nigeria, it is important not to overlook women's football. Oshoala has inspired many young girls who hope to pursue professional careers in the sport. Jay-Jay Okocha Augustine "Jay-Jay" Okocha is a legendary former Nigerian midfielder celebrated for his dribbling, creativity, and entertaining style of play. Okocha played for clubs including Eintracht Frankfurt, Paris Saint-Germain, Fenerbahçe, and Bolton Wanderers. His technical ability made him a favourite among fans who enjoy creative attacking football. Even after retirement, he remains a familiar name in discussions about Nigeria's greatest footballers. Nwankwo Kanu Nwankwo Kanu is another Nigerian football legend. He enjoyed success with Ajax, Inter Milan, and Arsenal, among other clubs, and represented Nigeria at major international tournaments. Kanu was part of Nigeria's gold-medal-winning team at the 1996 Olympic Games. His achievements have helped preserve his popularity among older supporters and younger fans learning about Nigerian football history. What Makes a Footballer Popular in Nigeria? Popularity is not based on goals alone. Several factors influence how Nigerians connect with footballers. Performance: Players who deliver goals, assists, saves, and strong defensive performances naturally attract attention. National pride: Representing Nigeria successfully can build a special relationship between a player and supporters. Personality: Interviews, public behaviour, and interactions with fans can influence a footballer's image. Club success: Winning major trophies or performing well in famous leagues can introduce a player to a wider audience. Media exposure: Television, online publications, and social media help determine which players remain in the public conversation. Inspiration: Players who overcome difficulties and achieve success can become role models for aspiring footballers. These factors explain why different players may be considered the most popular depending on the age group, location, club loyalty, or method used to measure popularity. How Can Fans Measure a Footballer's Popularity? There are several ways to compare the popularity of footballers, but each method has limitations. Social-media followers: These numbers measure online audiences, not necessarily how many people actively support a player. Awards and polls: These can show recognition from voters or fans, but the result depends on who participates. Search interest: Search rankings show what people look for online, which may be influenced by transfers, controversies, and major matches. Match performances: Goals, assists, trophies, and international achievements help explain a player's reputation, although sporting success is not the same as popularity. Public recognition: A player's name recognition can be widespread even among people who do not follow their club regularly. For example, a Nigerian footballer might receive millions of online followers while another player earns greater admiration for international achievements. Both can be popular in different ways. Conclusion Victor Osimhen is one of the strongest candidates for the title of Nigeria's most popular active male footballer in 2026. His goalscoring ability, European club achievements, contribution to the Super Eagles, and public recognition have made him a major figure in Nigerian sport. His success is also part of a much larger story. Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Ahmed Musa, and Asisat Oshoala have all contributed to the popularity and development of Nigerian football. Legends such as Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu continue to inspire supporters through their achievements. Ultimately, the answer depends on what popularity means to each person. If the focus is on current recognition, club success, and international profile, Osimhen has a strong case. If the focus is on historical influence, other Nigerian football icons deserve consideration too. What remains clear is that Nigeria continues to produce footballers who attract attention at home and around the world. Frequently Asked Questions 1.
